Were you checking the news every 10 minutes last week? There is nothing to be ashamed of. The whole country was. With the election coming to an end, the world still does not know where we are headed next. People want to see changes, but we do not know when we will see them.
How will we be able to make these changes? Political entrepreneurship.
What is political entrepreneurship?
Political entrepreneurs want to act as new and innovative leaders in the field of politics. These people want to disrupt politics and make radical changes. Women’s movements that fall in the category of political entrepreneurship include the Woman’s Suffrage movement, the Me Too movement, and the Women’s Liberation movement.
Why do we need political entrepreneurs?
Political entrepreneurs tackle the problems of our time including, but not limited to, an increase in school shootings, climate change, and misinformation. We need political entrepreneurs to come up with innovative ideas to solve these problems and to improve the state of the world.
Woman Political Entrepreneur Highlight – Tarana Burke
In 1997, Tarana Burke, a sexual abuse survivor, had a conversation with a 13-year-old girl who had been sexually abused. As a result, she founded Just Be Inc., a nonprofit organization that helps victims of sexual harassment and assault in 2006. At the same time, the Me Too movement was created. In 2017, after accusations of sexual harassment and assault were brought against the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, Alyssa Milano brought to movement to light through this tweet. Not only has this movement garnered support for women’s rights and pushed for more stringent punishments for abusers, but it also provides women with a safe space to discuss issues affecting them.
