Reconnecting with Your Inner Child

Anyone who’s spent time with kids knows they are limitless sources of imagination and creativity. As we grow, take on more responsibilities, and get distracted by the daily grind, we tend to get disconnected from that version of ourselves. Losing that childlike joy and excitement for things big and small can distance us from our endless creative potential. 


What is your ‘inner child’? Think of a young version of yourself; the embodiment of your purest, most authentic self, unaffected by social norms and self- doubt. Reconnecting with your inner child is a path to deeper emotional health, self- awareness, and fulfillment. It is a crucial aspect of our holistic wellbeing, and helps integrate our past and present to build a more harmonious and authentic life. 


Journaling and meditation can be great skills to begin to address your inner child. Reflect on your childhood memories, both positive and negative. Do these memories draw your attention to significant events that shaped your development? Reflecting can also uncover unresolved issues or traumas that have impacted behavior and development, which can then be addressed and healed. As you reflect, focus on your feelings towards your younger self. Feelings of empathy and compassion for your younger self foster a kinder, more understanding relationship with your adult self. Writing letters to your younger self expressing love and understanding can go a long way in feeling secure and loved in the now. 


Think of the activities you loved as a child—flying kites, climbing trees, or playing outside—then go out and do them! These activities are excellent for de-stressing and help our inner child feel safe through expressing that joy in the present. Allow yourself to revisit and enjoy these activities without judgment. 


As adults, it’s crucial to relearn the art of play. As children, we played effortlessly, making friends and learning valuable social skills on the playground. These interactions taught us how to get along with others and solve conflicts. As grown-ups, incorporating structured play into our lives can be incredibly beneficial. Spend time babysitting for friends or family, or engage with your own kids by breaking out the board games or learning a new card game. This not only fosters connection but also revitalizes that playful spirit within us.


Add some color to your life! One of the best things about kids is their unshakeable sense of self-confidence. They proudly wear whatever they like, regardless of what anyone thinks. Embrace this boldness by adding vibrant colors to your wardrobe, painting your nails with fun shades, or incorporating colorful decor into your home. Surrounding yourself with bright, cheerful colors can invigorate your spirit and help your inner child feel more expressive and confident.


Allow yourself time off from the demands of adulthood. Sometimes, simply indulging in a carefree and childlike activity, like having pancakes for dinner, can make a big difference. Embracing your inner child isn't about neglecting adult responsibilities; it's about finding a healthy balance between fulfilling your duties and enjoying the simple pleasures of childhood. Give yourself permission to play, relax, and rediscover the joy and spontaneity that come with being a kid.


Reconnecting with your inner child can have a profound effect on your mindset and problem solving skills. Children are naturally inquisitive, constantly asking questions about everything around them. Embracing your inner child means embracing a world of unbridled creativity and exploration. This mindset can help you break through rigid thought patterns and spark innovation. To do this, you need to let go of self-doubt, fear of judgment, and the constraints of conventional thinking.


Your inner child is unafraid of taking risks, trying new things, and having fun with creative endeavors. Let go of perfectionism and try something new! Allow yourself to feel emotions freely—children don't worry about whether their feelings are right or wrong; they just experience them. Give yourself permission to feel your emotions and validate them in the moment. This openness can lead to greater emotional freedom and a richer, more fulfilling life.


Reconnecting with your inner child is an ongoing process that requires patience and kindness towards yourself. By taking these steps, you can nurture a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself. Remember to regularly engage in playful activities, embrace creativity, and allow yourself to explore without fear of judgment. Be kind to yourself and celebrate each small step forward in reconnecting with the vibrant, curious spirit within you.
